Hong-Kai was my first friend in New York. 9 years ago I moved to the city and temporarily stayed with her in her apartment in Brooklyn, it was late August just like now. One evening, she showed me her work ‘Elevator Music’ and since that, this rusty yet poetic piece had been the sound of New York in my heart.
2006 Sound Installation by Hong-Kai Wang
4-channel sound installation ‘Elevator Music’ is staged in an elevator of an old warehouse building occupied by Chinese sweatshops, showrooms, imitation designer product patrons and two galleries. As the elevator travels through the shaft, sounds appropriated from various subway buskers drifts in and out of earshot. The juxtaposition of the buskers’ soundtrack composes an orchestration of Muzak for the everyday passengers of the building elevator.
